OK, you’re probably not coming here for the city’s ancient cobbled streets or its history but you have to be slightly impressed that the University of Durham is not only one of the UK’s top unis, it’s also the third oldest in England. Plus, there are so many castles, parks, museums and ancient markets to get to know here you’ll be spoilt for choice! However, if you’re looking for some fun instead of historical facts, the bars and clubs here are worth a look; Klute and Loveshack may well become firm favourites.
Not only does its Students’ Union have around 200 societies, each of the uni’s 14 colleges has a bar you can build up a thirst for. When you’ve worked out which is your favourite and want to try out venues further afield, Newcastle is only a 15-minute train journey away. For team sports, check out the city’s rugby club, and the uni’s rowing club is pretty impressive too.
